EU implements new textile waste collection rule to boost recycling

Starting next year, EU Member States are required to establish separate collection systems for textile waste, with the intention of reducing environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) published a briefing on May 21, highlighting the urgent need for improved textile waste management in Europe.

The briefing, titled “Management of Used and Waste Textiles in Europe’s Circular Economy,” revealed that most textile waste currently ends up in mixed waste. This unsorted waste results in lost opportunities for recycling and reuse, exacerbating environmental challenges.
